| en_US |

| dc.description.abstractenglish | The environmental pressure exerted by the construction industry due to the use of natural resources, together with the energy consumption and waste generated in the extraction, processing, and manufacture of construction elements, requires the implementation of alternative materials with low environmental impact that meet the physical and mechanical requirements of current regulations. Consequently, research is focusing on the use of innovative materials, techniques, and methodologies to reduce energy consumption and waste generation. However, researchers have decided to take a look back at ancestral construction techniques that used natural resources from the same environment. In this sense, clay soil and plant fibers, together with other easily grown species such as grasses, gave rise to the techniques of Adobe, rammed earth, wattle and daub, and cob. These are ancestral construction techniques that prioritize the use of locally sourced materials with minimal or no energy expenditure for their implementation. These materials offer environmental advantages in their reuse through moistening or final disposal in places where green areas are planned, due to the compostable characteristics of the starting elements. With this in mind, this research, developed as part of the thesis for the Doctorate in Technological Innovation in Building at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), considered the production of construction panels with a clay matrix reinforced with plant fibers. The research improved the physical and mechanical properties of rice straw and banana pseudostem fibers through alkaline treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for their incorporation as reinforcing elements in a clay matrix stabilized with cassava starch and carboxymethylcellulose. Natural resin was added to the mixtures to increase their mechanical performance. The mixtures were used to make experimental building panels coated with handmade cellulose paper from the banana plant. These panels have compostable characteristics and are intended to replace the gypsum boards traditionally used in lightweight dry construction or drywall systems. The aim is to innovate in construction materials through the use of raw clay, without firing, and post-harvest plant residues. This is an ecological material whose final disposal at the end of its useful life has zero environmental impact through its use as fertilizer in green areas. | en_US |
