Soils with significant clay content and high plasticity have particular characteristics that make them susceptible to problems associated with low shear strength, excessive volumetric changes, and high deformability. Therefore, in previous studies conducted for any infrastructure project, the type of soil present must be identified and characterized in order to identify potential problems that may arise. The research aims to characterize a typical plastic soil found on tertiary roads in the municipality of Ocaña to verify its potential for improvement through the use of cementing agents, identifying its physical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics. To this end, a three-stage methodology is proposed: reconnaissance of the sampling site, laboratory tests, and analysis of results. The results obtained allow the soil to be classified according to the unified system as MH (highly plastic clay loam), with LL=61.7%, LP=44.9%, and IP=16.78%, with a specific gravity of 2.78 and a unit weight of 1.382 g/cm³, optimal moisture content of 31.07%, and maximum dry density of 1.43 g/cm³. In terms of mechanical characteristics, it has an average friction angle of 20.25°, cohesion of 18.11 kPa, unconfined compressive strength of 135.61 kPa, and a CBR index of 5.37. In terms of chemical characteristics, the soil has a cation exchange capacity of 46.1 meq/100g soil and a pH=6.9. EDS analysis identified oxygen as the main element present in the soil, followed by silicon and aluminum, with a notable presence of iron oxide. In conclusion, the soil under study has the characteristics of a soil that may present deformability problems at high moisture values, which makes it susceptible, in addition to its physical and chemical characteristics, to stabilization with cementing agents.en_US
